Lesson

A Puzzle in Paradise

Through observations and investigations of local areas, students will be introduced to the concept of an ecosystem, using a systems approach. They will discover that living and nonliving things make up ecosystems. An ecosystem is a system formed by the interaction of a community of organisms with their physical environment. Students will use their aquarium model to construct an explanation of how ecosystems can vary in scale and proportion. They will explore how components in an ecosystem interact and create changes for the ecosystem as a whole, as well as, affect the components. Students will be guided to understand that Earth’s spheres can be found in ecosystems of all sizes.
